Meet people

Meeting people is usually less about finding the perfect stranger and more about creating repeated chances to see the same people, do something together and let familiarity grow.

What tends to work

Make meeting people easier

1. Go somewhere repeatedly

Friendship is strongly related to time spent together. Repeated classes, clubs, walks and regular events give acquaintance a chance to become friendship.

2. Do something together

Shared leisure and ordinary conversation predict growing closeness. An activity also gives you something to talk about without needing a dazzling opening line.

3. Count the small conversations

Research on “weak ties” found that interactions with acquaintances can add to belonging and wellbeing. Saying hello is not wasted effort.

4. Join around an interest

The NHS suggests groups, classes and activities built around things you enjoy. Shared interests remove some of the pressure from meeting somebody cold.

5. Volunteer

Volunteering gives you a useful role and repeated contact. Swindon Borough Council specifically notes that volunteering can help people meet others and learn new skills.

What's On

Events are useful because the activity comes first and the conversation can happen around it.

Synantisi

Synantisi (Greek Συνάντηση, “meeting” or “encounter”) is an experimental way for adults to discover a mutually welcome reason to talk. It is for friendship, shared interests, activities, language exchange and community or professional networking. It is not a dating app.

The idea is a modern continuation of the early-2000s Bluetooth-discovery era. Bluetooth itself dates from the late 1990s; phone-to-phone “bluejacking” became a visible craze around 2003. Synantisi keeps the interesting bit — discovering somebody nearby with something in common — and deliberately throws away the unsolicited-message bit.

Nearby mode

A future signed mobile app can run a visible 15–120 minute nearby session and look for mutual matches. The current Markdown cannot turn Bluetooth on by itself.

Private matching

Your private preferences are used for matching but are not advertised. Only a mutual match can produce an invitation.

Consent in stages

Match first, then both accept, then preview an Introduction Card. A contact handle is a separate later choice.

Off by default: Synantisi sessions are deliberately timed. You switch a session on when you want to meet people, and it expires. It is not supposed to follow you around all day or look for people while you sleep.

Try the current prototype

Download the Synantisi App

The current app is a portable Markdown application. Load it into a capable AI to build a private profile, run a two-person simulation and produce consent-gated Introduction/Contact Cards. Without a native bridge it correctly reports SIMULATION MODE.

The ordinary user only needs synantisi-app.md. The protocol and profile template are useful for development, review and testing.

How would a Synantisi Room actually work?

Think of an old IRC room, but with a private matchmaker at the door. A room can be advertised publicly with a URL and can contain people who have never met before. What stays private is each person's Synantisi matching profile.

1. Join a roomOpen a room URL and choose 15–120 minutes.
2. Stay privateYour full profile remains local; only a minimum Match Card is used.
3. Mutual matchNo public people-search list. A person appears only when both profiles accept.
4. Both chooseExchange introductions or open private text chat only after two YES choices.

Important: “known adults only” is a sensible engineering-test mode, not the goal of Synantisi. The real idea is meeting new people. Public stranger-facing rooms simply need stronger age assurance, moderation, blocking/reporting and privacy controls before we switch them on.

Would Signal do it?

Partly, but I would not make Signal the Synantisi room itself. Signal group/call links are useful, but participants need Signal and a call shares Signal profile information with the other people in it. Signal fits better as an optional after-match contact or call method.

A better first room layer: Jitsi

Jitsi is closer to the old “enter a room” idea: people can join a meeting from a browser link, cameras can be optional, audio can start muted, and the meeting has text chat. A future Swindon.org.uk room could link to or embed Jitsi while Synantisi separately handles private matching.

Event idea

Synantisi Dance Mode

Imagine a Saturday room advertised as House at Home · 20:00–22:00. You open one room link, choose how long you want to be visible, and optionally turn your camera on. Microphones start muted; the general room uses text and reactions.

Music

The room publishes a link to Radio 1 or another legitimate public stream. Each person opens the broadcaster's player themselves; Synantisi does not rebroadcast the music.

Camera wall

An optional Jitsi video room can show people dancing at home. Camera remains a choice, and turning it on obviously means you are no longer visually anonymous.

Private matching

If two current participants mutually match, Synantisi can say: “Someone here also chose tuxedo cats and house music. Exchange introductions?”

The live music will not be perfectly beat-synchronised on every device because streaming buffers differ, but for a casual online house party it may be close enough to be fun. Exact synchronisation can be a later problem rather than tonight's dragon.

Thalia

Humour as an icebreaker

Synantisi already keeps Thalia optional. After a mutual match and both people accept an introduction, Thalia can draft one light, nonsexual opener from the shared interests. The user reviews it before anything is sent.

Example: “Tuxedo-cat summit? Mine has already appointed itself DJ.”
